Demonstrators marched along Paulista Avenue shouting anti-racism slogans, and protesting against the federal government and its policies related to racism and the coronavirus pandemic.
Bolsonaro has rejected ordering quarantines and, to save the economy, demanded the end of restrictive measures applied by mayors and governors.
Members of social movements and fans of two of Sao Paulo's most important soccer teams, Corinthians and Palmeiras, joined the rally.
The anti-racism demonstration, the third in Brazil's largest city since May 31, was inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement and protests in the United States following the killing of George Floyd.
