1:22Now PlayingA police officer with the NYPD who was involved in an “apparent chokehold incident” at Rockaway Beach, Queens, on June 21, has been suspended without pay, according to Commissioner Dermot Shea.
Amateur footage that captured the incident quickly picked up attention when it was shared online.
The NYPD released bodycam footage that showed officers pulling a black man to the ground. Prior to this, the man and two others had shouted expletives at the officers on the boardwalk at Rockaway Beach.
One person can be heard saying “stop choking him, bro” and “he’s out, he’s out, he’s out,” after which a police officer steps away from the man on the ground. The man was eventually pulled to his feet and walked to a police vehicle.
“Accountability in policing is essential. After a swift investigation by the Internal Affairs Bureau, a police officer involved in a disturbing apparent chokehold incident in Queens has been suspended without pay,” Shea tweeted.
