0:37Now PlayingPolling stations opened at 6am on Tuesday, June 23, as New York voters cast their ballots for local, state and federal candidates in the state’s primary election.
The city Board of Elections (BOE) said it had processed about 550,000 absentee ballots this cycle, compared to 65,000 ballots in the 2016 presidential primary. The coronavirus pandemic spurred New York Governor Andrew Cuomo to issue an executive order allowing residents to apply for absentee ballots citing ‘temporary illness’ to avoid the risk of exposure at the polls.
There were more than 50 contests in New York City alone, including elections for Congress, State Senate and Assembly, and Queens Borough President. Freshman Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was up for re-election for the first time, up against former CNBC correspondent Michelle Caruso-Cabrera, also vying to represent the eastern Bronx and north-central Queens District 14.
Tight races were expected across the city. Ocasio-Cortez publicly backed former middle school principal Jamaal Brown for District 16, taking on incumbent Representative Eliot L. Engel, who has served 31 years in office.
This video was shared by Thahitun Mariam, a local community activist, and shows Ocasio-Cortez’s campaign truck rolling through Starling Avenue in the Bronx, home of Bangladeshi stores and restaurants. Mariam said the truck delivered a message in Bangla over an announcement system reminding residents to vote in the primary and played a Bengali song.
Tuesday marked the final day of in-person voting and the postmark deadline for absentee ballots.
