Vice President Mike Pence tried to paint a reassuring picture of the U.S. battle against Covid-19 citing “truly remarkable progress” during a briefing Friday while Dr. Anthony Fauci pleaded for Americans to take the virus more seriously.
In the first briefing by the federal coronavirus task force in two months, Fauci said health officials on the federal and state level have offered specific guidance to follow. But in many cases, he said, “the citizenry did not feel” they wanted to do that.
“You have an individual responsibility to yourself but you have a societal responsibility, because if we want to end this outbreak, we’ve got to realize that we are part of the process,” Fauci said.
The briefing came on the day after the U.S. recorded more than 39,000 new Covid-19 cases. Pence insisted all 50 states “are opening safely and responsibly,” adding that “we’ve all seen the encouraging news as we open up America again.”
