Nail salons and dog runs were back in business on Monday as New York City entered a new phase in the easing of coronavirus restrictions, but still Gov. Cuomo urged New Yorkers not to get complacent.
Indoor restaurant dining will be postponed indefinitely in order to prevent a spike in new infections and the state has issued guidelines that must be followed by all businesses.
Cuomo said he was concerned about reports of large holiday gatherings over the weekend in New York City, on Fire Island and in some upstate locations, and he said local governments must enforce social distancing rules. And urged locals to stay smart.
"You look at the festivities over July 4th, you see gatherings that are not socially distanced. They're not wearing masks. You see it in Manhattan, you see it on Fire Island," he said. "I don't know how else to say it: Actions have consequences. Our success was a function of our action. You change your action; you change your behavior. You're going to change the outcome. It is that simple."
Cuomo announced the cancellation of the New York State Fair, scheduled for Aug. 21 through Sept. 7 in Syracuse.
"That makes me personally very unhappy but that is where we are," he said.
The governor said there were nine deaths from the coronavirus and 518 new infections reported statewide on Sunday, a far cry from the height of New York's outbreak in April when deaths topped 700 daily.
For most people, the coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia and death.
