1:00Now PlayingAustralia’s hotspot state Victoria is setting tougher restrictions and fines for Covid-19-infected people breaching their quarantine, says Premier Daniel Andrews. Victoria banned self-isolating people from exercising outdoors.
Andrews said Tuesday that military and health teams would repeatedly and randomly door-knock homes to ensure people who should be self-isolating were at home.
The premier said teams had door-knocked over 3,000 homes of people who should have been self-isolating because they had tested positive or were awaiting test results for the coronavirus.
Andrews said it was "unacceptable" that over 800 of those people could not be located, even though they should have been home.
The government increased the fine for failing to self-isolate from 1,652 Australian dollars (approx. 1,170 US dollars) to 4,957 Australian dollars (approx. 3,500 US dollars). It is the state's largest on-the-spot fine for an individual.
Australia's second largest city Melbourne on Sunday introduced tough new restrictions, including an evening curfew for six weeks and many businesses will be forced to shut down from Wednesday night.
