as posted by the channelA Southern California wildfire erupted Wednesday afternoon, raging over thousands of acres and prompting evacuation orders for up to 500 homes as it threw up a huge pillar of smoke that could be seen miles away in Los Angeles, authorities said.
The fire was reported shortly after 3:30 p.m. in the Lake Hughes area of the Angeles National Forest, about 40 miles north of Los Angeles.
Within a few hours, it had surged over brushy hillsides and was spreading rapidly, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Water-dropping helicopters were attacking the blaze.
More than 15.6 square miles had been scorched, authorities said.
About 400 to 500 homes were under mandatory evacuation orders, according to the county Sheriff’s Department.
No injuries or damage to homes were reported.
The fire erupted during a heat wave that saw temperatures top 90 degrees in the area, with low humidity.
Several other wildfires also continued to burn in Southern California.
