2:22Now PlayingThe 2020 Atlantic hurricane season is off to a record start with thirteen named storms forming across the basin faster than any year going back to at least 1851. Two active storms threatened the Gulf Coast this week. Marco lost power as it neared Louisiana Monday and fell apart on Tuesday. Laura has strengthened into a Category 3 hurricane and is projected to make landfall overnight Wednesday into Thursday.
NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center forecasts between 19 and 25 named storms this year and up to 11 hurricanes—up to 6 of which could become major hurricanes. An average season only produces 12 named storms.
The most Atlantic active hurricane season on record was in 2005, which also began relatively early and produced 28 storms—including Katrina.
