2:24Now PlayingDemocratic presidential nominee Joe Biden seized on the allegations in journalist Bob Woodward's new book that President Donald Trump played down the threat of COVID to the American public but knew the dangers it posed.
Speaking in the key swing state of Michigan Wednesday, Biden called Trump's handling of the pandemic “beyond despicable."
“It’s a dereliction of duty. It’s a disgrace,” Biden said.
According to excerpts of the book, which is not yet released, Trump told Woodward on March 19 that he deliberately minimized the danger. “I wanted to always play it down,” the president said.
Biden said Trump "knowingly and wittingly lied to the American people for months," which resulted in potentially thousands of deaths.
"He had the information. He knew how dangerous it was, how all this deadly disease ripped through our nation. He failed to do his job on purpose. It was a life and death betrayal of the American people," Biden said.
