Mayor Ted Wheeler announced a state of emergency for the city, with Portland’s air quality dropping to the worst in the world as of Friday.
Record-breaking fires burning in Oregon, California, and Washington have sent smoke as far as Europe, according to atmospheric measurements.
More than 500,000 people across Oregon were forced to evacuate as wildfires scorched the state. The wildfires had burned upwards of 1,400 square miles as of September 11, reports said.
