1:32Now PlayingLexi Soulios and her family snuck past roadblocks to sift through the wreckage of their Oregon home on Friday, looking for anything they could salvage.
It was one of hundreds of houses destroyed by a blaze which has spread from Ashland through Talent and Phoenix amid major wildfires up the US West Coast.
While searching through the rubble, Soulios said it was hard to imagine how their life used to fit into what was now "so small".
Authorities say more than 1,500 square miles (3,880 square kilometers) have burned in Oregon during recent days, nearly double the amount in a typical year and an area larger than Rhode Island.
Governor Kate Brown said more than 40,000 Oregonians have been evacuated and about 500,000 are in different levels of evacuation zones, either having been told to leave or to prepare to do so.
