1:21Now PlayingMoments after the South Lawn signing ceremony of the Abraham Accords, a set of pacts between the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Israel, the leaders of those nations joined President Donald Trump in the State Dining Room for a working lunch.
In brief remarks to the press before the meeting got underway, Trump hailed the historic set of agreements signed Tuesday and thanked the participants for accomplishing "something that nobody thought could have been done, certainly not within 20 years."
The pacts formalize the normalization of the Jewish state’s already thawing relations with the UAE and Bahrain in line with their common opposition to Iran and its aggression in the region.
Trump is hoping the agreements will lead to a new order in the Mideast and cast him as a peacemaker at the height of his reelection campaign.
But they do not address the decades-long Israeli-Palestinian conflict. While the UAE, Bahrain and other Arab countries support the Palestinians, the Trump administration has persuaded the two countries not to let that conflict keep them from having normal relations with Israel.
Trump insists there are "five, six, even seven" additional countries in the region that are looking to sign on to the agreement.
"It's a very historic deal and will become more and more historic when other countries join, which they're going to do," Trump said. "So it's something that we should all be very proud of."
