1:29Now PlayingHong Kong leader Carrie Lam credited a new national security law for bringing back stability in the southern Chinese territory at a National Day reception Thursday.
Official celebrations followed the customary routine of an 8 a.m. (0000GMT) flag raising ceremony outside the Hong Kong Convention Centre and a short reception after.
Lam was at the forefront flanked by two of Hong Kong's previous leaders, Tung Chee-hwa and Leung Chun-ying, as well as the top mainland Chinese officials based in Hong Kong.
Lam took aim at "some foreign governments" accusing them of using "double standards" in their attitudes towards "the authorities in charge of implementing the National Security Law."
Beijing imposed a new national security law on Hong Kong earlier this year after months of protests provoked by the Hong Kong authorities.
Hong Kong's Civil Human Rights Front planned a protest for October 1, but the police refused to give permission for it, citing anti-virus and social distancing regulations as well as concerns about violence.
