Dr. Anthony Fauci, the top US virus expert commented on circumstances surrounding Trump's COVID-19 infection during a forum with his students at his former school, the College of the Holy Cross.
"I think that comparing the unfortunate situation that happened in the White House, I don't think you can extrapolate that to other situations where people are really very careful in the kinds of things that have been put together for sports," Fauci said.
He added he'd consulted with the NBA, the National Football League and Major League Baseball and they had introduced measures "based on science."
Fauci was responding to a question from Matthew Cedeno, a Holy Cross student and football player from Delray, Florida, who wanted to know whether professional and student athletes are safe in isolation bubbles in light of Trump's infection despite regular testing and having access to unlimited medical and security resources.
Fauci indicated that he was not comfortable speaking his mind regarding Trump's infection that occurred after the president ignored advise from infection-diseases experts on social distancing, wearing masks and taking other measures to curb the spread of the pandemic.
"What went on in the White House? I you know, I don't wanna ... every time I say something that's an issue, I wind up spending a lot of time answering phone calls and emails. I should say it was not done according to what I would have recommended."
Fauci commended measures that colleges and professional sports leagues are taking to curb infections, including requirements to avoid contact with others without a mask, regular testing and regular infection surveillance of the team.
