"As to putting my finger on the nature of the problem, you know, whether, as you say, it's just outright or systemic racism or how to tackle the issue of making it better those things, you know, are policy questions," Barrett said.
Barrett faced tough questions from democratic Illinois Senator Dick Durbin on an opinion she wrote arguing that a person who's convicted of a nonviolent felony should not automatically be disqualified from owning a gun.
In a dissent in the 2019 gun rights case of Kanter v. Barr, Barrett argued a conviction for a nonviolent felony such as mail fraud was not enough to disqualify someone from owning a gun.
But Durbin said a study published in the American Journal of Sociology Durbin pointed out that felons are barred from voting based on a 19-century statute that affects a large number of African Americans. "It still goes on today with voter suppression."
