"We don't take anyone's word for it. We will do our own independently reviewed process with our world-class experts," Newsom said during a briefing on the virus.
Newsom also cautioned that predictions about a vaccine being made widely available this year were also unrealistic, saying widespread distribution of a vaccine is more likely to be in 2021.
He said he didn't know when exactly in 2021 that would be, but suggested it would likely be in the middle of the year.
