"In 20 years as an election administrator here at King County elections, I've never seen anything like it. We received 300,000 ballots so far here at King County elections headquarters with two weeks before election day - record breaking," said Julie Wise, King County Director of Elections.
Wise says around 164,000 ballots were dropped off at return boxes this past weekend. That compares to 16,000 during that same time frame during the last presidential election. It was the first weekend after ballots were mailed.
County officials say in the first five days of early voting in 2016 only 10,659 ballots were collected. On Saturday, the county tweeted that multiple drop boxes had become so full, voters were unable to get their ballot through the slot. Last Friday was the deadline for counties to mail ballots to voters.
Election officials ran a test of the computers tabulating the ballots on Tuesday, one of the last preparations before counting begins on Thursday.
