Antonio Guterres told The Associated Press on Wednesday that the Pope's decision is "extremely welcome from our perspective," saying that the pope's comments align with the UN "principle of nondiscrimination."
Guterres also condemned police brutality as 12 peaceful protesters were killed in Nigeria on Wednesday.
"police brutality needs to stop and those who are responsible for acts of such dramatic violence are made accountable," he said.
Guterres added that he "trusts" that Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari will prevent further violence between police and peaceful demonstrators
