President Donald Trump’s stubbornly low approval ratings, the impact of the coronavirus pandemic and Biden’s lead in polls of the presidential contest are a drag on Republican candidates and an opportunity for Democrats.
With a likely loss by Democratic Senator Doug Jones in deep-red Alabama, and GOP seats in Montana, Georgia, Iowa and several other states now in the mix, a close presidential contest could leave the two parties splitting the Senate in half, analysts said.
However, in recent weeks several more races involving Republican incumbents have been put into play, including contests in long-time GOP bastions of Georgia and South Carolina, and Biden has been extending his lead in polls.
If Biden takes the White House by a significant margin and wins or at least keeps Trump’s margin razor thin in states like Georgia and South Carolina, Democrats have a chance for a clear Senate majority. But if Trump once again can pull off a come-from-behind victory, Democrats might have to settle for holding on to the House.
