But President Donald Trump continued to claim without evidence Thursday that Democrats are trying "to commit fraud," as the ballot counting in a handful of key battleground states extended for a second day.
He did not back up his claim with any facts or details. State and federal officials have not reported any instances of widespread voter fraud.
The president made the comments in the White House briefing room during a hastily called news conference in which he claimed "shenanigans" were harming a fair vote count.
He also renewed his criticism of widespread use of mail-in balloting in the pandemic.
"We're hearing stories that are horror stories, absolute horror stories, and we can't let that happen to the United States of America," Trump said. "It's not a question of who wins, Republican or Democrat, Joe, myself. We can't let that happen to our country. We can't be disgraced by having something like this happen."
The ballot-counting process across the country has been running smoothly, and the count is ongoing in several battleground states.
