3:29Now PlayingGeorgia's top elections official said a machine recount of the roughly 5 million votes cast in the presidential race in the state is on schedule to be completed this week.
The recount was requested by President Donald Trump after certified results showed him losing the state to Democrat Joe Biden by 12,670 votes, or 0.25%. Under state law, the losing candidate can request a recount when the margin is less than 0.5%. Trump's campaign formally requested the recount.
Counties have until 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday to wrap it up.
"To be as transparent as possible, we'll be releasing the recount results online as quickly as possible," Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger said Monday.
Under state elections board rules, an official recount must be conducted by machine, specifically high-speed scanners that read and tabulate the votes.
State election officials have said that it's possible the results of the recount could be slightly different from the original tally, but they've said it's very unlikely it would be enough to change the overall outcome of the election.
"Once this recount is complete, everyone in Georgia will be able to have even more confidence in the results of our elections, despite the massive amounts of misinformation that is being spread by dishonest actors," said Raffensperger, a Republican. "There are those who are exploiting the emotions of many Trump supporters with fantastic claims, half-truths, misinformation, and frankly, they are misleading the president as well, apparently."
Raffensperger also on Monday announced "an investigation into third-party groups working to register people in other states to vote here in Georgia" ahead of the Jan. 5 runoff contests that will determine which party controls the U.S. Senate.
