The pontiff said he hoped the "inconveniences" suffered by many could "help us purify a little the way of living Christmas".
He said that meant "getting away from consumerism" and making the festive season "more religious, more authentic, truer".
Christians around the world are facing an unusual Christmas, in many countries governments are implementing strict restrictions on movement of people and on social gatherings in order to avoid a third wave of the coronavirus.
The Vatican has moved up the hour of Pope's traditional Christmas Eve mass, in order to comply with Italy's 10 pm national curfew.
To date, more than 1.6 million people around the world have died of COVID-19, and over 73.5 million cases have been recorded, while the small Vatican City state has had 27 cases.
