0:48Now PlayingBrazilian police arrested outgoing Rio de Janeiro mayor Marcelo Crivella on Tuesday in connection with an alleged kickbacks scheme.
The evangelical pastor turned politician is scheduled to leave office on 1 January after losing his re-election bid to his predecessor, Eduardo Paes.
Crivella told reporters upon his arrival at the Rio police headquarters that his arrest was unfair. He also linked it to his alleged willingness to fight corporate interests and lobbyists.
"I am the mayor that fought corruption the most," said Crivella, a close ally of President Jair Bolsonaro, as he walked into Rio police headquarters.
Police officers arrived at his home at 6 am, local TV footage showed.
Investigations earlier this year showed Crivella had close links to Rafael Alves, a businessman that police and prosecutors believe led a kickbacks scheme at Rio city hall.
Alves promised government contracts in exchange for payments, police and prosecutors said.
Crivella's deputy mayor Fernando MacDowell died in 2018 after a heart attack. If the outgoing mayor doesn't run the city from prison, the head of Rio's city council will be in charge.
