0:51Now PlayingDemocrats will take control the U.S. Senate for the first time in six years after media executive Jon Ossoff ousted Republican David Perdue in Georgia, according to NBC and CBS.
Ossoff’s victory splits the Senate 50-50 between the two parties but tips the power in the chamber to Democrats because Vice President-elect Kamala Harris can cast a tie-breaking vote. Raphael Warnock earlier was projected to defeat Republican Kelly Loeffler in Georgia’s other runoff election.
Democrats hold the majority in the House of Representatives and now will be able to control the agenda in the Senate, including on nominations to fill President-elect Joe Biden’s cabinet and the judiciary. With such a thin margin, however, Democrats will still need to rely on Republican votes for most major legislation.
Georgia will send two Democrats to the Senate for the first time in 18 years. Ossoff, 33, will become the Senate’s youngest member.
