2:52Now PlayingPresident Donald Trump’s iron grip over the Republican Party slipped on Wednesday, as 10 of his fellow party members in the House voted to impeach him a second time.
And the prevailing theory is that his hold will continue even after he leaves office, making Republicans by and large afraid to break from him or do anything that might incur his wrath. Although that theory has been clouded by the mass exodus of businesses who’ve sought distance from him and social media companies who’ve booted him off.
Another possibility? Trump winds up like Sarah Palin. A decade ago, the former Alaskan governor and Republican VP candidate was the toast of the GOP, and yet, because she didn't have a public platform, her influence over the party waned pretty quickly, after which she was just this kind of dopey, marginal entertainer who'd show up at CPAC or some third-rate reality TV show and isn't even a voice in American politics anymore.
"It’s certainly possible if Trump doesn’t have a platform to intimidate and excite people, the world will move on once he leaves office," Bloomberg's Joshua Green says on Take Charge.
