1:30Now PlayingSenators have taken an oath to ensure “impartial justice” as jurors in Donald Trump’s historic impeachment trial, but some Republican senators want to stop the proceedings.
Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky forced a vote on the Senate floor Tuesday afternoon, attempting to declare an impeachment trial of a former president unconstitutional.
The motion failed 55 to 45.
"A sham, this is, a travesty, a dark blot on the history of our country," Paul said in a fiery speech on the Senate floor.
He called on Senate colleagues to stop this "kangaroo court" and compared the way Trump egged on the crowd outside the White House before the mob stormed the Capitol to past speeches by Democratic lawmakers, including now-Vice President Kamala Harris.
Paul said an impeachment trial against a former president no longer in office will only serve to divide an already fractured country.
"This impeachment is nothing more than a partisan exercise designed to further divide the country. Democrats claim to want to unify the country, but impeaching a former president, a private citizen, is the antithesis of unity," he said.
Republicans are also questioning whether Trump’s repeated demands to overturn Joe Biden’s election really amounted to incitement.
What seemed for some Democrats like an open-and-shut case that played out for the world on live television — as Trump encouraged a rally mob to "fight like hell" for his presidency — is running into a Republican Party that feels very differently.
