Mongolia enforced strict measures for weeks at a time in 2020 in an effort to combat the Covid-19 virus. While in past years families could find reprieve outside the city during peak months for air pollution, restrictions have forced families to stay put in smog that, on average, in January contained particulate matter about five-times worse than what the World Health Organization recommends, according to data from the U.S. Embassy in Ulaanbaatar.
Government banned unprocessed coal and subsidized the cost of new "smoke-free" coal briquettes, cutting average air pollution levels this year in January by about a third (38%) compared with two years ago, before the ban was in place.
The amount of soot in the air remains hazardous to health, however.
Derelict neighborhoods populated by informal housing, including wooden homes and traditional yurts called gers, are the source of most of the air pollution and where the smog is thickest. Families burn coal for warmth in winter, when temperatures fall as low as -40 Celsius.
