0:50Now PlayingCaptain Tom Moore, the centenarian war veteran who became a U.K. lockdown icon after an epic sponsored walk to raise money for the National Health Service, has died at the age of 100.
Moore’s family announced his death with a post on his Twitter account. He had recently tested positive for Covid-19, drawing messages of support from Prime Minister Boris Johnson and other prominent figures.
“I’m so sorry to hear that Captain Tom has passed away in hospital,” Health Secretary Matt Hancock said on Twitter. “He was a great British hero that showed the best of our country and I send my best wishes to his family at this time.”
Moore, who was knighted by the Queen for his charitable exploits, raised more than 32 million pounds ($44 million) for the NHS after walking 100 laps around his garden before his 100th birthday last year.
