4:41Now PlayingChinese artist and performer Ai Weiwei said on Friday that major film festivals and online TV platforms like Netflix and Amazon have refused to show his latest documentary "Coronation" on the Covid-19 pandemic in China due to its sensitivity.
Ai, who was once detained by China and now resides in Europe, made a documentary using footage filmed in Wuhan by his friends and associates.
His film offers a rare glimpse of the pain that Covid-19 patients in China suffered, with footage of them struggling to breathe as medical workers in protective gear attempted to save them.
"We cannot trust WHO. We really need an independent investigation," he said.
His was one of two new films about Wuhan released on Friday, the eve of the anniversary of the 76-day lockdown in the central Chinese city where the coronavirus was first detected.
Ai's documentary was forced to seek viewers online, a testimony to the party’s influence over the global film industry.
