9:10Now PlayingDonald Trump's historic second impeachment trial has opened in the Senate with graphic video of the deadly Jan. 6 attack on Congress after the defeated former president whips up a rally crowd.
The lead House impeachment manager Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md. ended his arguments with a personal story of members of his own family who were with him on Jan. 6 -- the day after they had buried his son, who took his own life in December.
He wanted them to be with him as they counted electoral votes, and he told them that "of course" it would be safe. His daughter and son in law were in an office in the Capitol when the rioters broke in and hid under a desk, where they sent what they thought were their final texts. "They thought they were going to die," he said.
Away from them in the House chamber, Raskin said he heard the rioters "pounding on the door like a battering ram," a sound he will never forget.
Raskin cried as he recounted his daughter telling him she didn't want to return to the Capitol, saying that was the worst part of the day for him, along with seeing an American flag used as a battering ram.
"Senators, this cannot be our future," Raskin said through tears. "This cannot be the future of America."
