1:40Now PlayingLead House impeachment manager Rep. Jamie Raskin opened his presentation against Trump tracing his efforts in the weeks ahead of the Jan. 6th riot, imploring his backers to come to Washington, and then celebrating and praising them when they did.
"If anyone ever had a doubt as to his focus that day, it was not to defend us, it was not to console us, it was to praise and sympathize and commiserate with the rampaging mob," Raskin said. "This is a day that will live in disgrace in American history - that is, unless you ask Donald Trump."
Raskin repeatedly took aim at the underpinnings of the defense case, suggesting that their reliance on the First Amendment as a defense was a mischaracterization of the prosecution's case.
The trial, he said, was not about Trump's political speech but rather his incitement to violence _ which is not protected by the Constitution. He said it was worse than someone yelling "fire" in a crowded movie theater, an oft-cited legal principle.
Rather, Trump is akin to a fire chief who actively encourages the setting of fires and then sits back and enjoys the conflagaration as it spreads."
