0:55Now PlayingOn Friday, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo dismissed as a "lie" any accusation that his administration hid the correct numbers of COVID-19 deaths at nursing homes.
The Democratic governor said it was cruel to the families of deceased loved ones to say that the state was hiding the number of deaths.
He made the comments during a press briefing at the statehouse in Albany.
Cuomo faces mounting challenges to his leadership on the coronavirus pandemic as state lawmakers threaten to strip him of the power to issue emergency orders and federal investigators scrutinize his administration's handling of nursing home data.
The U.S. Justice Department has been examining the governor's coronavirus task force and trying to determine whether the state intentionally manipulated data regarding deaths in nursing homes.
In recent weeks, the administration revealed that 15,000 long-term care residents have died, up from the 8,500 previously disclosed. Cuomo says that's because health officials had previously recorded them as hospital deaths.
