2:58Now PlayingWhite House press secretary Jen Psaki said Tuesday that President Joe Biden is considering executive actions on gun control and gun safety measures following two mass shootings in the United States in less than a week.
Speaking to reporters during a gaggle on Air Force One as the president flew to Ohio, Psaki said "putting in place common sense gun safety measures has been a passion of the president since he was in the Senate," and it will continue to be an issue he focuses on in the White House, particularly in the wake of the recent shootings.
She said Biden is "considering a range of levers" from executive actions to working with Congress through legislation to enact stricter gun control measures as well as actions to address violence in communities.
But Psaki didn't detail what particular actions Biden might take and added, it would not happen overnight. "As we know, this tragedy just happened last night. So I would not expect a new proposal put forward under 24 hours," she said.
In remarks earlier Tuesday responding to the shooting in Colorado, Biden urged Congress to move quickly to close the loopholes in the background check system and to ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. But he didn't mention executive actions.
Senate Democrats say they are pushing toward a vote on expanded gun control measures but prospects for any major changes are dim, for now, in the closely divided Congress.
Psaki was also asked whether President Biden would attend a potential NATO summit in June.
The press secretary said she knows Biden "would love to go overseas and travel overseas and and have discussions about global issues and how to work together on a range of issues, including the pandemic, economic recovery," but added she doesn't have any information about the likelihood of his attendance at this point.
