0:52Now PlayingHundreds headed to witness the eruption of Iceland's Fagradalsfjall volcano in Geldingadalur, near the capital of Reykjavik. It is the first eruption on the peninsula in almost 800 years. No injuries have been reported.
It began on the evening of March 19, after more than 50,000 earthquakes were recorded in the past three weeks.
"This is very exciting for us because we have been here since, for a bit more than two weeks. So we came really in the Reykjanes to analyze the formation here. We can get the ground cracks and so on, triggered by magma intrusion but also the tectonic activity. For us this is just amazing. It is really interesting to see that," says Joel Ruch, a professor at the University of Geneva.
Hundreds have walked 8 kilometers to get to the volcano but a number had trouble returning to the road afterwards.
"I think we've travelled for about three hours," says Egill Orn who has made it to the volcano.
"I don't even know what time it is," says his companion Margret Yr
More than 100 rescue personnel helped travellers get safely back to their cars last night as bad weather hit the area.
The eruption site has now been closed to the public because of bad weather.
