11:54:56Now Playing(Apr. 7) Han Lay, a beauty pageant contestant from Myanmar, made international headlines when she spoke out against the country’s military at the Miss Grand International event in Thailand.
As she strode forward confidently there was no hint of what was to come when Yangon University student Han Lay first appeared on the stage in Bangkok.
While fighting back tears, she pleaded for international help to establish democracy back in Myanmar.
''If the situation is happening somewhere, people around the world try to find a solution and help them,'' she said.
The beauty contest came at the end of a day in Myanmar in which at least 114 people were killed, according to the online news service Myanmar Now. It followed the army's February 1 coup that ousted from power the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi.
The reported fatalities included several children under 16 years old.
The death toll in Myanmar has been steadily rising as the ruling junta grows more forceful with their suppression of opposition to the military's takeover.
