2:09:29Now Playing(Apr. 8) Mourners gathered outside London's Buckingham Palace to pay respects and leave floral tributes to Prince Philip, who died on Friday (9 APRIL 2021) at the age of 99.
Misha Alexandroff Wilson - dressed in a black suit and tie as a mark of respect - left flowers outside the Palace gates. He said he wanted to honor Philip's life of service and show his support for Queen Elizabeth II.
"The queen has been married to this gentleman for 70 years - that's about four times longer than I've been alive," he said. "I definitely wanted to come down here and lay some flowers to let her know that she is being supported in this really difficult time for her."
Local resident Hope Mortimer laid flowers outside the Palace and said the news of Philip's death had shocked her, despite his age, while 11-year old Hannah Joy Driver said she empathized with the monarch.
"It's pretty sad because like the queen and Prince Philip have been married for years... and then one of them dies, it's just pretty sad, really, and I feel bad for the queen."
Philip was the longest serving royal consort in British history by more than a decade.
It was a role he assumed in 1952 when his wife ascended to the throne after the sudden death of her father King George VI.
Having given up a promising naval career when Elizabeth became queen at age 25, Philip was not content to stay on the sidelines.
He promoted British industry and science, espoused environmental preservation long before it became fashionable, and traveled widely and frequently in support of his many charities.
The flag at the Palace, the queen's residence in London, was lowered to half-staff after the announcement of Philip's death.
