1:36Now PlayingIndia reported another global record in daily coronavirus infections for a second straight day on Friday - 332,730 new cases.
The surge already has driven its fragile health care system to the breaking point with understaffed hospitals overflowing with patients and a critical shortage of oxygen and supplies.
Dr. Kulvinder Singh Kochhar, Medical Superintendent at Shanti Mukand Hospital, said authorities had not responded to phone calls or mail asking for more oxygen. He also said the hospital had 110 patients, with 85 on oxygen.
People were sharing oxygen tanks and waiting in vehicles and in rows of stretched outside quarantine centers in the capital New Delhi.
Hospitals are taking to social media pleading with the government to replenish oxygen supplies.
The crowded hospitals are threatening to stop admitting new patients.
With Friday's new cases, India has confirmed 16 million cases of coronavirus infection since the pandemic began.
The country of nearly 1.4 billion people is second only to the United States in cases.
India has recorded 2,263 deaths in the past 24 hours for a total of 186,920 attributed to COVID-19, according to the Health Ministry.
