3:48Now PlayingThe reality on the ground for many in Myanmar is bleak as they see no end to the violence that arrived with the military coup.
“Our futures expectations suddenly disappear," says a journalist in Yangon, "and just going out isn't totally safe anymore. You are in constant worry if the police or army might suddenly arrest you.”
The military says it wants a true and disciplined democracy, after claiming widespread fraud in last year's general election. It has promised to hold "free and fair" elections but the state of emergency's come at an extreme cost.
Since overthrowing the civilian-led government, the junta has killed more than 750 protesters throughout the country with nearly 3,500 others detained or sentenced to prison, according to the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners.
“If this continues, we don’t expect to have a future any more," says a banker who lives in Yangon, "it’s possible that what we dare not think will happen."
"What makes our concerns and fears worse is the possibility of a civil war like in Syria. I think this will lead to a dark age for our future generations.”
