11:54:56Now Playing(May 3) President Joe Biden said the U.S. will "be in a very different position" on COVID by the end of the summer, but he refused to predict if or when the nation would ever reach herd immunity.
Biden made the comments at Tidewater Community College in Norfolk, Virginia as he was wrapping up a speech promoting his education spending initiatives.
Biden said his administration is continuing to boost vaccine production and make sure as many adults are vaccinated as possible.
But he said there is a debate into what constitutes herd immunity.
"Is it 70 percent of the population, is it 68 percent, is it 81 percent?" he asked.
Biden said regardless, the nation will be in a better place to deal with the coronavirus pandemic by summer's end and he urged everyone eligible to receive the vaccine to do so immediately.
"My plea to everyone: Get vaccinated now, please. Thank you," Biden said as he left the room.
Biden's comments come as some public health experts say the U.S. may never reach herd immunity due to the number of circulating COVID variants as well as a significant amount of vaccine hesitancy among the population.
