2:59Now PlayingThe first dialogue between Colombia's president and the National Strike Committee, which has been holding nationwide protests for almost two weeks, ended Monday without an agreement between the parties.
After more than three hours of talks with President Iván Duque, the National Strike Committee resolved to carry on protesting.
"There was no empathy from the government with the reasons, with the demands that have led us to this national strike," said Francisco Maltés, member of the National Strike Committee.
Duque, Vice President Marta Lucía Ramírez and Peace Commissioner Miguel Ceballos attended the meeting with various union and industry leaders representing the National Strike Committee.
The protests started on April 28 over proposed tax increases on public services, fuel, wages and pensions, but it has morphed into a general demand for the government to pay longstanding debts to the most vulnerable in society, such as Indigenous and Afro Latino people.
Even though the administration withdrew the tax reform, protests have continued and grown as reports emerged of police violence, deaths and disappearances.
Violence during some demonstrations has resulted in 26 people dead, including a police officer, and more than 800 people injured, according to government figures.
Human rights organizations have denounced numerous police abuses and give a higher death toll.
