Bloomberg's Allen Wan tests the Xpeng P7 in a cross-country road trip, the longest autonomous driving test in China. The Xpeng P7 fleet drove over 3,600 kilometers (2,237 miles) from Guangzhou to Beijing with a large portion of its highway drive under the control of the NGP (Navigation Guided Pilot). It was a showcase of Xpeng’s latest autonomous driving tech.
Competition in the Chinese EV market is stiff. China is the biggest car market in the world. There were 25 million cars sold in the country last year. 1.3 million were EVs. Tesla, which was the first company to come out with their autonomous driving functions, was the best-selling EV in China last year. So EV makers like Xpeng and Nio are rolling out their own autonomous functions, hoping to get ahead of the game.
The larger question is, what is the future of driving? Some experts say there is a possibility that by 2030, half of all cars in China will be EV cars with autonomous functions.
