A state of emergency has been declared in the Timaru and Ashburton districts in the country's Canterbury region due to the adverse weather, authorities said.
A farmer was rescued by helicopter after becoming stranded in floodwaters in New Zealand as authorities issued weather warnings for certain areas in the country on Sunday. Local helicopter crews were called in to help emergency services winch a farmer to safety after he became stuck by a tree in floodwaters on his farm near Ashburton.
In Christchurch, footage showed flooded roads and residents wading through high waters to get to their homes as the rain continued to fall in the city.
Authorities have warned residents to avoid all necessary travel with further flooding expected in the region.
Heavy rain was forecast to continue in the next 24 hours, local media reported.
