2:14Now PlayingCanadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said the discovery of 215 children's remains in an unmarked burial site in British Columbia is "part of a larger tragedy" in Canada's past.
"The residential school system was only one piece of a larger colonial policy designed to erase language and culture, to assimilate indigenous communities so that they no longer existed, as distinct peoples," Trudeau said.
He pledged to "right past wrongs to support the healing of survivors, families and communities, and to walk with you on this difficult reconciliation journey," he said during debate late Tuesday in Canada's House of Commons.
Leaders of the countries indigenous communities want every former residential school site - institutions that held children taken from families across Canada - to be examined.
The discovery is not likely an isolated incident, they say.
In 2015, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission issued a report saying Canada's church-run, government-sponsored residential school system - in operation for 120 years - was a tool for cultural genocide.
"As we continue to implement the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's calls to action, we have put in place the legislation and support for indigenous communities to revitalize and strengthen indigenous languages and culture," Trudeau said during the debate.
"To me, reconciliation means recognizing areas where we have made mistakes or failed to do better, said Conservative opposition leader Erin O'Toole.
"It requires restoring trust in the federal government and its institutions, and it means building partnerships with indigenous communities for the well-being of all Canadians," he said.
