1:51Now PlayingEuropean Union officials expressed concern on Monday over the rapid spread of the highly infectious delta variant, first discovered in India.
"The scientific advice we're getting from the ECDC (European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control) is not good," European Commission Vice-President, Margaritis Schinas, said during a meeting of the European Parliament Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety.
He said modelling forecasts showed that the delta variant would account for 90 per cent of coronavirus cases by the end of August.
He said ECDC modelling scenarios suggested that further relaxations of coronavirus restrictions would lead to "a significant increase in daily cases in all age groups with an associated increase in hospitalisations and probably deaths."
He said he had doubts about London's Wembley stadium hosting the semi-final and final match of the European soccer championship at high capacity.
"I think here that UEFA would do well to carefully analyze its decision," he said.
The UK government has said Wembley will be allowed to hold the Euro 2020 semi-finals and final with at least 60,000 fans.
