0:55Now PlayingDonald Rumsfeld, the defense secretary who became the face of U.S. foreign policy under President George W. Bush while the administration’s troop deployments toppled hostile regimes in Afghanistan and Iraq, has died. He was 88.
He died on Tuesday at his home in Taos, New Mexico, according to the New York Times, citing Keith Urbahn, a spokesman for the family. The cause was multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer.
Along with Vice President Dick Cheney, Rumsfeld was one of the main architects of Bush’s Middle East wars, triggered by the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, when one of four hijacked airliners crashed into the Pentagon while he was still in the building. Rumsfeld’s job then evolved to include fighting two of the longest wars in U.S. history, during which he was called upon to finesse the administration’s military shortcomings at press conferences.
“A period that brought unprecedented challenges to our country and to our military also brought out the best qualities in Secretary Rumsfeld,” Bush said Wednesday in a statement. “A man of intelligence, integrity, and almost inexhaustible energy, he never paled before tough decisions, and never flinched from responsibility.”
In speeches delivered in 2002 Rumsfeld said, “Defending against terrorism and other emerging 21st-century threats requires that we take the war to the enemy.”
