1:53Now PlayingUK Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Friday paid tribute to German Chancellor Angela Merkel during her final visit to the UK before stepping down later this year.
Johnson celebrated the relationship between the UK and Germany quoting "more than 21,000 Germans attend UK universities" adding "one in five people in this country (UK) are driving around in a German car."
He went on to promote a new "energy superhighway" which is being proposed between the countries citing possible advantages to be had of "British tea to be brewed with the harvest of German sunshine" and "German bratwurst will be grilled using British wind power."
Johnson commended Merkel on her "truly historic commitment" to "global diplomacy" and celebrated her "scientific expertise" in dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic. Linking into science the UK PM announced his pride in the establishment of a "Herschel" medal in Merkel's honor to recognise "German and British women in astrophysics."
Later in the day, the German Chancellor - who is probably on her last trip to Britain before leaving office - is due to meet Queen Elizabeth II at Windsor Castle outside London.
