Restaurants and markets were closed and streets were empty during working hours in the searing conditions.
Mansour Al-Otaibi, a construction company owner, said his laborers were not working during the day hours as they were not able to hold "metals or tools" in the midday heat.
Posts on social media said the temperature read using digital thermometers in the shade indicated 53 degrees Celsius while in the sunshine it exceeded 70 degrees Celsius (158F).
