2:03Now PlayingWhite House press secretary Jen Psaki says that combating ransomware remains a top 'priority,' for the White House as President Joe Biden prepares to convene a meeting on Wednesday with key government leaders to discuss efforts to counter the attacks.
The single biggest global ransomware attack yet continues to bite as more details emerge on how a Russia-linked gang breached the company whose software was exploited.
Criminals used a tool that helps protect against malware to spread it widely. Thousands of victims have been identified in at least 17 countries, with ransom demands of up to $5 million reported.
The attack comes less than a month after President Joe Biden pressed Russian President Vladimir Putin to stop providing safe haven to ransomware gangs including the one responsible for the latest attack.
The company whose software was exploited in the biggest ransomware attack on record said that it so far it appears that fewer than 1,500 businesses were compromised. But cybersecurity experts suspected the estimate was low and noted that victims are still being identified.
"The attack over the weekend underscores the need for companies and government agencies, as well, to focus on improving cyber security," Psaki said.
Biden said Saturday that he ordered a "deep dive" by U.S. intelligence into the attack and that the U.S. would respond if it determines the Kremlin is involved.
