Italy won the European Championship in 1968 but has also won four World Cup titles. The most recent was in 2006.
England was trying to win its first title in Euro 2020.
After failing to qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, the country has now set a new national record by going 34 games unbeaten.
The evening ended in celebration as Donnarumma saved the last penalty, bringing Italy on top of Euro 2020.
