1:36Now PlayingLawmakers on the congressional panel investigating the violent Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection described the hearing as an "historic" and "democracy-defending moment."
Tensions on Capitol Hill have only worsened since the insurrection, with many Republicans playing down, or outright denying, the violence that occurred and denouncing the Democratic-led investigation as politically motivated.
Democrats are reminding people how brutal it was, and how the law enforcement officers who were sworn to protect the Capitol suffered serious injuries at the hands of the rioters.
Republicans on the panel, Reps. Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger, are defending their role.
"Almost every member of the Republican Conference understood in days immediately after January 6th what had actually happened, and many of them said so publicly. And the fact that so many members of our leadership, and others, the fact that they've gone from recognizing what happened on the sixth to protesting in front of the Justice Department on behalf of those who were part of the insurrection, is, is something that I can't explain," Cheney said, referring to a press conference held while the hearing was taking place questioning the treatment of those arrested for their role in the January 6th attack.
"I think it's a disgrace," she continued adding, "I know that this committee will be focused on getting to the truth of what happened in a non political non partisan way. This is not a political campaign. This is deadly serious and we'll investigate every aspect."
The chair of the committee, Rep. Bennie Thompson, said the next hearing may happen next month.
